*** 12/11 CLOSED DOWN ***

Late opening pub at the busy intersection near the Queen Victoria Market - weekends going right through. Action wise, it's one of the few places which is often busier during the week, due to the the backpackers resident upstairs clubbing in the city at the weekend.

The front bar is deliberately shabby, with a touch of everything goes. It attracts a wide variety of people, and sometimes hosts bands or DJs. The very different back area is worth a visit, as it's here you'll find some comfy, ambient seating. The segregation of areas works well, and caters for many types of people.

This is one of the biggest names synonymous with backpackers around - Monday is backpacker night and the Public Bar Hotel goes absolutely crazy.

Outdoor Area / Beer Garden

An outdoor area in front of the venue works a treat in the summer.

Live Music Venue

There'll be gigs playing towards the end of the week.

Public Bar is really cheap on Mondays with 4.50 jugs of Geelong beer or whatever and 1 dollar pots. Good place to go if ur short on money. Its also 5 bucks entry which is cheap also. Also music hardcore on that night it was and fairly loud. Its also got a pool table.

Gets pretty crowded. The only negative thing i can say is there's only like 2 toliets for girls and 2 for guys. prepare for a wait if ur heading to the loo.

If you're not a Uni student, avoid this pub on Mondays at all costs. On other nights this is a great social place to hang out and relax. There are fantastic bands playing most Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays. The best thing about it is that it's not a pretentious bar. People go here to actually enjoy themselves.

Just to make sure that there aren't any unhappy punters on a Monday night at the Public Bar, the price of a jug on Mondays is actually $4.50. However, this is because of the overly generous pourings. You see it's $1 pot night and since at the Public Bar you'd be hard pressed to get a jug that won't squeeze out 4 and a half pots you pay $4.50... fair enough I figure. But Mondays aren't everything!!

Summer time is when the Public Bar really gets going, with picnic style tables out the front picking up every last bit of the evening sun. They have a great menu with everything from steak and chips to Asian wok noodles to enchiladas to a great range of burgers. The food is unreal and really cheap.

The best thing the Public Bar has to offer is a huge group of regulars that all know each other and are always welcoming to new people. In fact it's the pub where "everybody knows your name".

Monday nights at the Public Bar rock. This place is a must for uni students and backpackers due to the large quantities of beer sold for small quantities of money. $4 Jugs of Carlton? Are these people nuts? No, they're looking after all of us alcoholic, always inebriated, poor uni students. If you want a great night on a Monday, hit the town, head for the markets and find yourself a seat in the public bar!
