Venuestar Review

Rather hidden, and not a pub that springs out at you, the Bull and Bear Tavern earns its name from the large amount of stockbrokers that come and drink here. It's split between two levels: a more gentlemanly upstairs white-collar bar, and an everything-goes downstairs area for blue-collar and younger people.

We'll start with upstairs: a posh, if not stuffy feel, small, with some rather large seats. The bar staff likened it a little to Cheers, mentioning that it was full of regulars, known by name. Interestingly, regulars receive discounted drink prices. And Basil, the manager upstairs, could be right out of Fawlty Towers.

Downstairs things get noisy. Shouting, skolling, pool, more pool, pinnies, darts, Australian classics blaring from the jukebox. Beer, more beer, bourbon and Coke. A bit of a boys' hangout, and a great place to party.

A separate bistro area downstairs serves medium priced meals.

The venue is open generally open Mondays through till Saturdays and closed Sundays.

Readers' Reviews

Ever wanted to find your country local pub in the middle of the city? Fancy a night out that won't break your budget and where you can hear what your mates are saying without having to purchase a megaphone? Then the Bull and Bear is the place for you. Set over three levels with a quieter bar on the top floor, a decent bistro in the centre and a more sporty type feel bar in the basement, many a good nights have been had by many good folks at the Bull and Bear. On a week nights a few regulars haunt the bars, however things heat up on a Friday evening, and at times it can be almost impossible to find a spot to perch. Recommended for a cruisy night with a group of mates.
