Venuestar Review Right near Carlton's Lygon Street precinct, Pugg Mahones' robust Irishness is a nice change from ravioli and vino bianco.
Pugg's is not dissimilar in style to its brother in the city, but gathers a more local, friendly crew rather than a mismatched bunch of people from outer suburbs who work or party in town.
Milling about on the street outside works well in warmer months, but otherwise you can choose from booth seating or wooden chairs, and suck back a Guiness and a hearty stew. Or better still sit at the bar and chat to fellow drinkers - a mix of students and workers.
And it's nice to know you can always grab a gelati on the way home. Julie Whiting Readers' Reviews Don't discount Puggs on the other nights of the week. If you love the good old two piece acoustic ensemble, then there's the band on Tuesdays. They will strum out some good ole tunes.
Crowds can vary but when the Uni Students want a drink this place can get pretty busy. Overall this is a great pub on the weekend because of the upstairsdownstairs mix. Mark, West Melbourne, 06/05

Readers' Reviews Saturday nights would have to the the busiest night of the week and it attracts a crowd mainly 18- 25ish. The crowd is fairly laid back and everyone seems up for just a good night out. Upstairs hosts a live band which plays great music, and in between sets top 40 songs are played. Thursday nights are also worth checking out, although they are quieter than Saturday nights, they're still fun and a quality alternative to the Hawthorn area. The crowd is uni aged, but not necessarily uni students (if that makes sense). The crowd is up for a good fun filled night, and everyone is generally pretty easy going. Lizzie, Melbourne, 01/04 The two levels at Puggs have two quite different feels to them. Downstairs there are more tables and booths, and there is always a lot of talking going on. Upstairs the mood is perkier, and a lot of fun. There is usually a cover band and a DJ, and lots of happy people. Whether you're there for a few quiet ones and a chat, or more than a few and a bit of a dance, Puggs is great for both. Liz, West Brunswick, 04/03
