Readers' Reviews The Burlesque Bar is my new favourite hang-out in Melbourne, somewhere I take the Couchsurfers and other randoms I meet when they want to know what makes the Melbourne bar-scene so different. This is not a beer and bourbon barn for the footy crowd! The Burlesque Bar is a thin, dark, cosy and opulent space decorated in a mixture of eclectic french-flavoured kitsch. Elbow your way up to the bar, or secure a stool or a church pew for the evening - you will not be far from the action. The 'smokers' lounge outback is decorated with Alice in Wonderland style murals, and photo opportunities abound. However, it is not the decor that keeps me coming back. The Burlesque Bar lives up to its name - Burlesque shows 4 nights a week, from some of Melbourne's finest corsetted Femmes Fatales. I particularly enjoy shocking new converts with the Atrocity shows on a Sunday - hearkening back to the Theatre de Grand Guignol of Montmarte - violent, murder, insanity, abuse... not for the faint of heart :D Tonight though, I am heading in for Ladies night. No, I am not a lady... but fishnets, corsets and bright smiles entice. It matters not whether I go 3 nights in a row, or after an absence of several weeks... the Bar staff and the performers remember names and are always happy to see regulars return.
