Venuestar Review Turf Bar is one of the city's larger and more popular watering holes. Located at the corner of Queen & Bourke many would remember it as the old 'Matildas' but its history goes back to 1976 when the Great Bookie Robbery happened there. Today the venue offers a Victorian style fit out, pub style dining, and stacks of beers on the menu (over a dozen on tap alone). With a very relaxed atmosphere it's a great meeting place with emphasis on sport. Three big screens and five plasmas throughout the venue means Turf Bar dishes up the AFL, cricket and rugby in style. Friday Nights go ballistic with the corporate crowd with a DJ playing all the retro and contemporary office favourites. Michael Edmonds

Readers' Reviews Looks a little more classy and overdressed on the outside but relatively welcoming when you sink down the stairs into a warm wooden clad open bar. Good choice of beers on tap, albeit of the Irish bar variety; in fact the Turf bar seems to be an Irish bar in all but name. Nice decor, and well maintained, with a large area to wander around with stage seating and more private booth areas. Late week crowd as expected in this part of town is predominantly suits. Less busy earlier in the week; suitable for a more quiet catch up.
