Venuestar Review The Purple Emerald, like many of Melbourne's bars, has a narrow facade. It may be easily overlooked by the bustling Flinders Lane traffic if it weren't for the funky jazz-influenced tunes pumping out.
The room itself, whilst narrow, extends quite a way back, and is adorned with many comfy couches and armchairs. The centrally located bar is lined with bar stools. The clientele is about as diverse as you'd want. Carrie Lindsay

Readers' Reviews On the few occasions I've found myself looking for a Brunswick St bar in the city centre, the Purple Emerald hit the spot. The doormen are friendly, as are the bar tenders (one girl was willing to put together whatever we asked for), and they do a deadly cinnamon vodka infusion. It seems to attract a great range of people, from trendy young yobbos to intellectual parents to older men from Japan, Jamaica...and all like to keep to themselves. The live bands may be the bar's best attraction - always something funky or even bluesy and very dance-worthy. Interestingly my friend and I are always the first to the little dancefloor, but others soon join. You have to be lucky to get a couch on a busy night and it can get pretty packed. Standing near the bar gives a better view of the trippy mirror wall and bits-n-piecey decorating I love to look at. Dee, Brunswick East, 10/07
