Venuestar Review Constructed in conjunction with a cricket tour of the colonies by the English national team in 1870, this old world pub is delightfully comfortable. A mix of old and young enjoy a drink here. The worn booth seats, the deer head, the stuffed fox, the antlers .. just makes us want to curl up in front of the fire with a cognac. One really does feel like one has just walked into their living room.
Two bars areas exist - a large, front bar which is chatty, and an intimate small back bar for the more gentlemanly discussions.
Drinks are all brewed at origin and imported, or produced by an Australian craft brewer or wine maker.
Let's also not forget the small, separate dining room which does quality meals from the resident chef.
Watch for the pub sign swaying in the breeze out front. Highly recommended. And a big part of South Melbourne's cultural identity!
Simon Woodhouse Readers' Reviews Having read the initial review I visited the Pub to enjoy a few drinks with friends, when I arrived I was pleasantly surprised, the profile listed on this site gave me the impression that the place would be a little old fashioned almost tired. The interior does have some original features from its restoration back in the 90's but under the new ownership the bar feels clean and fresh and very welcoming. As an avid beer drinker I was also very happy to find that the choices were not the normal pick but a well thought out selection of European and Australian Craft beers on tap as well as a good selection of bottled beers with similar pedigree in the fridge. We did eat in the bar and enjoyed some equally good food. This friendly pub does obviously attract a local crowd but the atmosphere is not unwelcoming, more a where have you been and why did it take you so long to find out we were here. Readers' Reviews Nice, stylish pub with great value food and drinks. friendly staff, great atmosphere and a beautiful warm fire in the winter. good venue for watching sport with a plethora of plasma screens around the pub. Anothony, Kensington, 07/08 Located at the Albert Road end of Clarendon Street it has been under new ownership and managment since March 2007 and is making its mark in the area as a relaxed, friendly and welcoming establishment. The food is comparable to that offered by other hotels in the area. The daily specials, e.g. parma with chips and salad plus pot of beer for $12, are a real treat. A wide-ranging menu is also offered. The dining room is quietly elegant and comfortable. If you are sports mad the screens in the front bar are there to cater for your interests. All age groups and categories of people frequent this nice little venue and blend well. Cheryle, South Melbourne, 02/08
